EAST LONDON ARTS AND MUSIC
ELAM
28 /05 / 2018
ELAM is founded on six core values that frame all its activities and shape the attributes sought in trainees:
Inquisitiveness
Resilience
Reflectiveness
Dependability
Independence
Collaboration
These values, alongside trainees’ qualifications and industry partnerships, are critical for their long-term success.
Client Vision
The vision for ELAM was driven by Charles and Will Kennard, known as Chase and Status; they were instrumental in bringing this concept to life, both politically and physically, throughout the design process.
Site Context and Challenges
The site allocated by the Department for Education (DfE) was part of Foster and Partners’ regeneration plan for the Olympic corridor. However, it presented significant challenges:
Northern Boundary: The vibrations and noise from the London Underground and overland lines.
Western Boundary: The A12, with noise levels constantly over 98 decibels and significant pollution.
These conditions were particularly unsuitable for a school specializing in music and digital arts, which requires professional-grade recording studios and a performance space.
Design Solutions
The design addressed these challenges through several key features:
Construction: The base structure is concrete up to the first floor, with a portal steel frame above.
Air Quality Control: The building is fully air-conditioned to mitigate the pollution levels.
Acoustic Management: Classrooms are strategically placed to act as buffers against the noise from the railway track.
Innovative Use of Space: The racked seating for the performance space also forms the ceiling of the student/staff dining area.
Educational Offering
ELAM provides a dual focus in its curriculum:
Standard Academic Lessons: Courses in Maths, English, and other core subjects.
Industry-Specific Training: Courses designed to create industry-ready professionals in music and digital arts.
Award Recognition
ELAM was recognized as a runner-up for the Civic Building of the Year at the Spaces Awards 2018, highlighting its innovative design and contribution to the community.
