The Cube

This project involved the transformation of a 1930s bungalow for a client who is passionate about circular economics, art, and design, with exacting attention to detail. The design process explored various options, from complete demolition to retaining as much of the existing structure as possible, aligning perfectly with the client's circular ideology.

The new design replaces the single-storey pitched roof mass with a simplified cubic form. Key design features include:

  • New Entrance: Created by the overhang of the new first floor.

  • Roof: Flat blue/green roof incorporating solar panels and water attenuation during heavy downpours.

  • External Material: Scorched timber, promoting sustainability and a modern aesthetic.

  • Ground Floor: Features a large open-plan kitchen and dining area for entertaining, which opens onto the rear garden.

  • First Floor: Contains three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and an additional office/bedroom for working from home.

  • Simplicity and Complementarity: The design’s simple lines visually complement the surroundings and protect the property from extreme weather conditions.

  • Natural Light and Ventilation: Large windows and sliding doors connect the house's rooms to the garden, providing natural cross ventilation and ample natural light.

This project successfully transformed an outdated bungalow into a modern, sustainable home. The design creates a harmonious living space that respects the environment and the client's aesthetic and functional needs by integrating circular economic principles, recycled materials, and energy-efficient features.
